Reuters’ blog moots the parallels between the Israeli domestic intelligent service dealing with Jewish ultra-nationalists, with Britain’s same in dealing with loyalists in Northern Ireland.Comparisons have a logic at a certain level, e.g. vociferously objecting to peace made with “the enemy”. But would the “Jewish division” go so far as to take up arms against the state they claim loyalty to? Yet I can understand the fear by Jewish settlers that they would be abandoned, so to speak, as part of a formal peace settlement; they would be allowed to remain on the settlements, but under new authority (shared or absolute) with the Palestinians. Shin Bet has an important job in discovering the extent of the potential backlash, if this were to occur.
