Allan Leonard, Alliance Party candidate for Fermanagh & South
Tyrone, is attending a Chinese New Year event at Lakeland Forum,
Enniskillen, and highlighting that there are more than ‘two
communities’ in Northern Ireland.
Allan Leonard will say: “The Chinese community is the largest ethnic
minority in Northern Ireland, and I am delighted to celebrate our rich
diversity at this New Year event.
“Many people think of Northern Ireland as a place divided into two
communities, Catholic and Protestant. We must work to overcome this
perception, and give the voices of ethnic minorities in Northern
Ireland space to be heard. We need to look forward to our future
together as a diverse yet united community.
“There is much work to be done to improve community relations and
inclusiveness. Racially-motivated attacks are on the increase, and it
is all of our responsibility to reduce this.
“For my part, I will lead by example and demonstrate that Northern
Ireland can be a place where people from all ethnic backgrounds can
live together in harmony. I am encouraged by members of the Chinese
community coming forward to participate in politics, such as party
colleague Anna Lo, Chief Executive of the Chinese Welfare Association.”
