I am encouraged by the fact that 260 people have been prosecuted since new hate crime legislation was introduced last June. The consultation for a hate crime law in Northern Ireland is underway. Of course, it will only be effective if it is enforced with prosecutions. In this regard, the success of securing convictions for the display of paramilitary flags in North Down and East Belfast advances the cause againt sectarianism and bigotry.
