Michael McDowell is a friend in Washington DC, a Northerner in North America. In transatlantic spirit, I got him an Grand Union Flag (America’s first national flag and raised by George Washinton’s army on New Year’s Day 1776). It features the emblems of the St George’s and St Andrew’s crosses in a field of red and white stripes.
From a perspective of multiple identities, Michael wrote a laudable and interesting
obituary to Conor Cruse O’Brien, which was published in the Irish Times.
