Building Bridges

Previous intern and friend, Rick Orr, posted this quotation on his facebook profile, which I’d like to share:

BUILDING BRIDGES

An old man going a lone highway
came at evening cold and gray,
to a chasm vast, deep, and wide
without a bridge to span the tide;
the old man crossed in twilight dim,
the sullen stream held no fear for him.
He turned when on the other side
and Built a bridge to span the tide.

“Old Man” said a pilgrim near,
“You waste your strength with building here.
your journey ends with ending day.
Your ne’er again pass this way.
Your feet no more must need pass o’er
this sullen stream with sullen roar.
You’ve crossed the chasm deep and wide.
Why build at eventide?”

The old man turned his hoary head.
“Friend, in the path I’ve come,” he said,
“there followeth after me today
a youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that’s as naught to me
to that fair youth a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in twilight dim-
Good friend, I build the bridge for him.
